Guide to the Ratings
Ratings are based on 34,521 responses from Consumer Reports subscribers with a home Internet account who completed the 2006 Annual Questionnaire online; they may not be representative of the U.S. population. Price is the median monthly fee for service, as reported by respondents, which may include bundles or special discounts. Prices varied considerably. Reader score reflects overall satisfaction with the ISP and is not limited to factors listed under Survey results: If everyone were completely satisfied with their service, the reader score would be 100; 80 would mean respondents were very satisfied, on average; 60, fairly well satisfied. Differences of less than 5 points between scores aren’t meaningful. The following scores are relative and indicate satisfaction with each ISP compared with the average: Speed reflects satisfaction with connection speed (dial-up ISPs weren’t included as they were uniformly lower-rated than broadband ISPs). Reliability reflects satisfaction with the ISP’s ability to maintain stable, uninterrupted service. Technical support reflects respondents’ satisfaction with the ISP’s response to service problems. A dash (-) indicates that there was insufficient data to provide a score.
